Magic Buckets is a Connect IQ data field that turns any outdoor ride into a guided session, helping you fill today's Low, High, and Peak XSS targets without following structured intervals. This article walks through installing, registering, and using the data field on your Garmin Edge or Garmin watch.
Best for: Outdoor riding with real-time training targets on Garmin Edge devices or compatible Garmin watches.

Magic Buckets vs. Xert Dashboard
Magic Buckets actively guides you on how to fill your daily XSS targets — telling you what intensities to ride to hit your Low / High / Peak goals. The Xert Dashboard (XDB) field shows your training data and progress but doesn't guide your efforts. See Xert Dashboard (XDB) for Garmin Connect IQ for that one.
If you want guidance on how to hit today's targets, use Magic Buckets. If you want a real-time view of your effort and fitness, use XDB. You can install both — they're separate data fields and serve different roles.
Quick Reference
- Install: Get the Magic Buckets data field from the Garmin Connect IQ Store
- Register: Record a short activity with the field → save → sync to Xert via Garmin Connect
- Use: Start a ride, view the data field screen, and follow the bucket guidance
- If registration fails: Make sure the activity syncs to Xert via Garmin Connect, not via Strava
What You'll Need
- An active Xert account (logged in on xertonline.com)
- A compatible Garmin Edge device or Garmin watch with Connect IQ support
- Garmin Connect Mobile (recommended) or Garmin Express (desktop)
- Phone Bluetooth and internet connection during the initial data fetch on each ride
Step 1 — Install the Magic Buckets Data Field
- Open the Garmin Connect IQ Store and search: Xert Magic Buckets
- Tap Install and select your Garmin device
- Sync the installation to your device (Garmin ConnectIQ app or Garmin Express)
Note: Magic Buckets installs as a Connect IQ data field, not a standalone app.
Step 2 — Add the Data Field to an Activity Profile
- On your Garmin device, open the activity profile you'll use for outdoor rides (e.g., your Road or Outdoors profile).
- Add a new data screen with a single data field.
- Select Connect IQ Fields and choose Xert Magic Buckets.
- Save the profile.
Step 3 — First-Time Registration
Registration happens automatically the first time Xert receives a Garmin activity that has the data field installed.
- Start a short recording using the profile with Magic Buckets installed. A few seconds is enough.
- Save the activity.
- Sync the activity to Garmin Connect, then allow it to sync to Xert.
- Once Xert receives the file, you'll see a confirmation in Xert Online that the data field has been registered.
Important: Registration requires the activity to sync via Garmin Connect. If your activity syncs via Strava instead, registration will fail. Confirm Garmin → Xert syncing is enabled before this step.
You can delete the short test activity afterward if you want, both in Garmin Connect and in Xert.
Step 4 — Use Magic Buckets During a Ride!
Critical: Make sure the Garmin Connect mobile app is open and running on your phone before you start your ride. Magic Buckets uses the connection to Garmin Connect to fetch your latest Fitness Signature and daily training targets from Xert. Without it, the data field can't fetch your targets.
- Start your ride on your Garmin device.
- Navigate to the data screen with Magic Buckets.
- Follow the on-screen guidance to fill your Low, High, and Peak buckets toward today's targets.
- If your buckets fill unevenly, the guidance adjusts to push your effort toward the deficient buckets.

How Magic Buckets Adapts to You
Unlike a structured workout that prescribes specific intervals, Magic Buckets adapts to what you actually do:
- Push harder or longer, and your Challenge Level ramps up more quickly
- Back off or recover, and your Challenge Level gradually declines - the easier you ride, the faster it drops
In other words, Magic Buckets responds to your effort rather than dictating it. If you'd rather pick a specific Challenge Level and interval duration in advance, use the Xert Workout Generator instead.
Troubleshooting
"Fetch err" appears on the data field
The data field couldn't connect to the Garmin Connect mobile app to fetch your training targets.
To resolve:
- Open the Garmin Connect mobile app on your phone
- Stop and restart your activity on the Garmin device — this re-initiates the connection and re-fetches your targets
XSS values on Xert Online are different from Magic Buckets
The final analysis on Xert Online is always correct. Minor differences are normal because the data field uses estimates during the ride. Bigger differences can result if you achieve a breakthrough or near-breakthrough during the ride — the post-ride analysis incorporates these changes.
The data field didn't register after my first ride
The most common cause is the activity reaching Xert via Strava rather than via Garmin Connect.
- Confirm your Garmin Connect → Xert sync is connected and enabled (see Xert + Garmin Integration)
- Re-sync the activity from Garmin Connect to Xert
- Try recording another short test activity
- If still failing, contact support@xertonline.com
The Magic Buckets data field isn't showing on my device
- Confirm the data field installed to the correct device in the Garmin Connect IQ mobile app
- If the Connect IQ mobile app is giving you trouble, try installing through Garmin Express on desktop instead
- Confirm you added the data field to the correct activity profile(s)
