Activity Sync, Workout Sync, and Connect IQ data fields (Magic Buckets, Xert Dashboard, more)
Best for: Athletes using Garmin Edge or watch devices who want activities automatically synced into Xert, structured workouts delivered to Garmin Connect, and real-time Xert metrics via Connect IQ data fields.
In this guide: How to connect Garmin, how activities sync, how workout sync works at a high level, and FAQs/troubleshooting.
Overview
Connecting Garmin to Xert gives you a clean workflow:
- Record activities using your Garmin Edge or Watch
- Completed activities are synced to Garmin Connect
- Xert imports the activity from Garmin Connect for analysis
- (Optional) Xert can send workouts to Garmin Connect and/or forward activities to Strava with Xert summaries
For real-time guidance and Xert-only metrics (MPA, Magic Buckets, etc.), install Xert’s Connect IQ data fields.

Integration Features
Automatic Import for New Activities
Xert automatically imports activities recorded on your Garmin device. In Sync → Garmin Connect, you can use Edit Activity Types to control what gets imported (e.g., cycling only) and exclude activities you don’t want in your training history (walks, hikes, gym sessions, etc.).
Important notes:
- Garmin only sends activities recorded on a Garmin device to Xert. Activities completed in third-party apps (e.g., Zwift or Rouvy) are not forwarded through Garmin Connect to Xert.
- Garmin Connect will not automatically receive activities recorded in the Xert EBC app (Garmin has not provided permission for this). You can manually upload the .fit file to Garmin Connect.
Structured Workouts Sent to Garmin
With Send Scheduled Workouts enabled, Xert will send either your scheduled workout or your Workout of the Day (WOTD) to Garmin Connect.
Where to find the workout in Garmin Connect:
Garmin workouts do not appear in the Garmin Planner/Calendar. Instead, open the Garmin Connect mobile app and go to: Training & Planning → Workouts → “Xert Cycling Workout”
Confirm the Created date matches today, then send it to your Edge device (or compatible watch) and follow along using Garmin’s native workout screen.
Important notes:
- Garmin typically stores one Xert workout and replaces the previous one to avoid clutter.
- Garmin workout format limits (including step limits) may prevent some longer or complex workouts from syncing.
- Garmin does not support ramped/curved intervals. Ramps (including curved XSSR-style targets) may be exported as a single average power step, which can differ from the intended SMART interval behavior.

Real-Time Xert Data via Connect IQ
Xert’s Connect IQ data fields bring Xert metrics and guidance directly onto your Garmin device during the ride—ideal for training, group rides, and racing.
This includes:
- Magic Buckets (XMB) — real-time Low/High/Peak target guidance
- Xert Dashboard (XDB) — real-time progress tracking and key Xert metrics
- Additional Xert fields (TTE/TTR, Segment Hunter, What's My FTP?, and more)

Common Questions (FAQ)
My Garmin showed a Breakthrough, but Xert didn’t. Why?
Real-time Breakthrough alerts on Garmin are an on-device estimate based on simplified logic (for example, power exceeding MPA for ~5 seconds). Garmin devices don’t run the same full post-ride analysis that Xert performs on the server.
After your activity uploads, Xert processes the file with additional data checks and signature extraction. At that point, Xert confirms whether a meaningful signature change occurred and awards a Breakthrough (or Near-Breakthrough) if appropriate.
Tip: If you see a Breakthrough alert on your Garmin, don’t stop immediately — keep pushing until you truly can’t sustain the effort. The longer you can hold above MPA, the larger the resulting Breakthrough may be.
Why do values on Garmin differ from Xert Online after upload?
This is normal — especially after a Breakthrough or Near-Breakthrough. If your Fitness Signature changes, Xert will recompute key metrics for that activity (including MPA, XSS, and Difficulty) using your updated signature. The server may also apply data validation that can’t be done in real time on a Garmin device.
To compare what you saw during the ride:
- Open the activity in Xert
- Scroll beneath the MPA chart
- Click Previous to view the activity using the starting signature - often corresponds with what you saw in real time
Why isn’t my workout appearing in Garmin Connect?
Most common causes:
- No workout has been scheduled or Automatically Schedule a Workout of the Day setting is disabled
- Garmin Authorization was revoked (permissions changed)
- Garmin Connect app eneds a refresh
- Fast fix: Re-send the workout from Xert, then fully close and reopen the Garmin Connect app. If it still doesn’t appear, disconnect and reconnect Garmin in Sync → Garmin Connect to refresh permissions.
Can I use Garmin + Strava + Zwift/Rouvy/MyWhoosh together?
Yes! Many Xerters do. A common setup is:
- Outdoor rides: Garmin → Xert
- Indoor/virtual rides: Zwift/Rouvy/MyWhoosh → Xert
- Strava: Optional, often best via Xert → Strava (so reports are included)
If you record the same virtual ride on both Garmin and Zwift, Xert may receive two versions. Xert will usually detect duplicates automatically, and you can later choose which file you want as the Master (or discard one depending on which data you want to keep, like GPS/elevation vs. Garmin-specific data).
